Top Tips for Decorating Your Rental Property (Without Losing Your Deposit)

Trying to decorate the home you are renting can be difficult if you can’t make permanent changes that might upset your landlord. However, with a little creativity and the right approach you don’t have to live in a boring beige box. Here is a list of renter-friendly decorating tips that will help you to personalise your place and still keep your security deposit safe.

1. Removable wallpaper

If you’re after fun walls, then peel-and-stick wallpaper is your new best friend. They come in a wide range of colours and styles, all you have to do is stick and when you're ready for a change or to move then just peel it off.

Pro Tip: Always test a small patch first to make sure it won’t damage the paint underneath.

2. Area rugs

Experimenting with different style rugs is such an easy way to bring out your personality in your home. It is completely safe, an easy fix, and if anything, protects the original flooring. Layering rugs can create visual interest and help define spaces in an open-plan layout.

3. Lights & lamps

Option 1, you can swap the basic light fixtures for something more stylish, you just have to keep the original fittings to reinstall before you move out. Option 2, you can add different style lamps throughout your home for better ambiance.

4. Curtains & blinds

Switch the basic blinds to stylish curtains; this can elevate the whole room. If you can’t change the rods, consider tension rods or no-drill brackets.

5. Temporary backsplashes

Peel-and-stick backsplash tiles are perfect for renters, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. They're waterproof, easy to apply, and just as easy to remove.

6. Leaning furniture

Large mirrors, framed art or bookshelves can simply be leaned against the wall instead of hung up. This adds depth and personality without a single nail hole.

7. Creative storage

Use decorative baskets, bar carts and open shelving to add storage and style. Furniture that doubles as storage (like ottomans or bed frames with drawers) also helps keep clutter at bay in small spaces.

8. Greenery

Plants make any place feel alive and homey. Whether it’s a statement monstera or a few low-maintenance succulents, greenery is an easy, non-permanent way to decorate. No natural light? Faux plants are also a great option.
